Amsterdam Light Festival 2026: everything you need to know
Edition 15 of the Amsterdam Light Festival runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027. Canal cruise, walking route, tips and how to book.
The Amsterdam Light Festival (ALF) is one of the best reasons to visit the city in winter. For 53 days between late November and mid-January, the canals and nearby streets of Amsterdam are transformed into an open-air exhibition of large-scale light art. Edition 15 runs from 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027.
If you have not been before, here is what to expect and how to make the most of it.
When does the Amsterdam Light Festival 2026 take place?
Edition 15 opens on 26 November 2026 and closes on 17 January 2027. The lights are on every evening from 16:30 to 23:00. On New Year's Eve, the festival closes earlier at 21:00.
That window between 16:30 and 18:30 is worth noting. The sky goes dark around 17:00 in late November and early December, so if you arrive just as the lights come on you get that brief, dramatic moment when the artwork appears against a still-blue sky before full darkness falls. It makes for better photos than pitch black.
How to experience the Amsterdam Light Festival
There are two ways to see the festival: by boat or on foot. Each gives you a completely different experience.
By canal cruise
The boat route is the signature Amsterdam Light Festival experience. Artworks are installed along the canals and can only be seen from the water, which makes a guided canal cruise the most complete way to take in the full exhibition.
The cruise takes approximately 75 minutes and covers the main canal ring, passing all the major installations. Most boats are covered and heated, which matters more than you might expect on a cold December evening in Amsterdam.
You can book a Amsterdam Light Festival canal cruise with drinks and snacks through GetYourGuide: https://www.getyourguide.com/amsterdam-l36/amsterdam-light-festival-rondvaart-drankjes-en-snack-optie-t1082052/?partner_id=SA8A0PZ
Book in advance. The festival is popular and evening slots sell out, especially on weekends in December.
On foot: the Illuminade walking route
The walking route, called the Illuminade, covers 4.5 kilometres through the city centre. It is a free, self-guided route through public spaces, parks, and streets, with artworks that are different from the canal route installations. You download the festival app to navigate, which becomes available in mid-November.
The Illuminade is a good option if you are with children, prefer to set your own pace, or want to see the festival without booking. It takes two to three hours at a relaxed pace. Wear warm shoes.
Where to get information and tickets
The festival info point is at Amstel 1, near Waterlooplein. Tickets for the canal cruise are available online through booking platforms including GetYourGuide.
Tips for visiting the Amsterdam Light Festival
The canal cruise: what to expect
The guided cruise departs from a central Amsterdam location and takes around 75 minutes. Most boats seat 20 to 40 people. The route covers the main canal ring, where large-scale light installations are moored or mounted along the banks.
The boat is covered and heated but open at the sides for viewing and photography. Drinks and snacks are included in most ticket options. But maybe subject to additional charges.
Photography tip: turn off your flash. A flash at night illuminates the people in front of you but ruins the long-exposure effect that makes light art look best. Put your phone on night mode and keep it steady.
Seeing the festival from your own boat
If you want a more private experience, some electric sloep rental providers in Amsterdam allow evening use during the festival period. This is not standard year-round; check availability directly with providers. An evening sloep with a group of friends, your own food and drinks, and no fixed schedule is about as good as Amsterdam in winter gets. But this is the coldest option, as these boats don’t have any cover at all.

About the Amsterdam Light Festival
The Amsterdam Light Festival was founded in 2012 and has grown into one of Europe's largest winter light art festivals. Edition 15 in 2026-2027 marks 15 years of the event. Each edition commissions new work from Dutch and international artists, installed specifically for the canal environment.
The festival runs the Illuminade walking route and the Cruise the Light boat route as its two main programmes. Artworks are typically removed after the festival ends in January.
